How to Save Money on Finch Seed
Written By: Keldorn FirecamWith my own miserly impluses I realized I was spending about $5.00 a month on feeding my own finche, and I thought to myself I how can I extend the life of this 3LB bag of bird seed I buy at the Pet store to last say 2 months?
Math never lies:,
My bird seed cup holds 55 Grams,. From a 3LB bag of bird seed this would fill it about 25 Times.
1.36 KG = 3LB / 1.36 KG = 1360 Grams. 1360 divided by 55 = 24.
Now I actually counted the seed manually by filling the cup and dumping it another container. I counted more around 28 times. (About the number of days in a month). Now I would empty it and refill everyday like the pet bird specialists say. "Give them fresh seed everyday". Well if your doing that. Stop right now!. You are actually wasting your money following that advice! I also figured from the price that the bag being $4.99 that works out to about 0.20 cents a cup. Outrageous!..the Scrooge inside you screams.
The pet bird experts and the seed manufactures would have you believe that some finch eats 3LB of seed a month.
My Zebra finches actually eat about half that seed in 2 days.oh.. Now you can see the math? Multiply that 25 by 4 now and you have 100. As in a 3LB bag will now last 3 months! But there is a problem, and probably this is why before you may just been dumping the seed out everyday without a thought. You see the cup will be filled up with empty seed shells as they eat the seed. It makes the cup look as if needs to be changed.. But that is where your assumption is wrong. You see half the seed cup will probably still contain good seed. Your dumping this right in the garbage. You just need to find a way to remove the seed hulls from the good seed. And thats where you will need a Kitchen Seive.
Head to your local dollar store. Here we have the Dollarama and you can pick one of these up for $1.00. Its well worth the investment. With this tool you will be able to seperate the empty seed hulls from the seed.
What you do is everyday as they eat the seed, just stick your finger in the food and stir it around and peridiocally add more seed. By day two, it might start looking more like its just seed hulls and needs to be changed. But instead dump the seed into the Seive and shake it, the dust and empty seed shells will fall out, and you will be left with good seed. Just add new fresh seed to replace the already eaten seeds.
You are now pinching like a real miser, I hope you found this article helpful.
